pictures of Angkor and some other temples in the Siem Reap area

from: www.rcrusoe.com

In addition to the city and palace, the area is literally littered with temples, of all sorts of shape, and dedicated to a wide variety of gods or individuals (such as a king's mother, etc.). They all date from that period.

Here are some pictures of Angkor and some other temples in the Siem Reap area:

One of those temples has been left almost in the state in which it was found, overgrown by the jungle. The gate of Ta Prom shows right away how trees can be invasive.

Some roots look like huge snakes.

Prey Rup is one of the first temples built along the Siem Reap river, around 950 AD. At this time, bricks were used for the structure of the buildings and the façades were covered with stucco.

Angkor Wat is the largest temple built in this period. This huge temple is surrounded by a moat and a wall.

Inside the walls, several pools were full of water to represent the oceans. In the center, the 5 towers represent heaven.
